Back to Cairo

We finished our tour in Cairo and spent a few days wandering the markets and neighborhoods by foot. I loved walking through the markets - brightly colored scarves and clothes hang from the store fronts, jewelry and trinkets sit atop of tables, the smell of corn and falafel fill the air, shop owners chat with anyone passing by. After my best attempt at haggling, I walked away with a lovely black belly-dancing hip scarf that jingles as it shakes. :)

I spent the last few evenings with several new friends. As we spent time in a restaurant overlooking the main road, we sat mesmerized by the chaos below. The roads are filled with cars, small and large buses, motorcycles and bikes, donkeys and horses, families and children. Pedestrians play "Frogger" as they leap across the road, one bit at a time. There are no stoplights or signs. Very few streets have any sort of lane markings. And if they do, the lines serve as mere decoration. Horns honk relentlessly. Firecrackers shoot out of sunroofs in honor of the feast celebration that is taking place.

After several weeks in Egypt, I bid goodbye to new friends and to the fascinating history and culture of this county! Off to Roma to meet my family!!
